BSERE - Basic Survival School

BSERE stands for Basic Survival Evasion Resistance Escape School. It's one week of basic survival training in the wilderness of Northern Manitoba in Springer Lake (2 hours North of Winnipeg). Most of the training is done in groups but the last 3 days are spent in isolation. You are left alone in the middle of the woods, usually by the lake where you can do some fishing. You have no food and only equipment to filter the water and some Jujubes (candy). No tent eaither so usually you need to keep a fire going constantly, unless you're lucky to be doing the course during the warmer period.

One of the most grusome tasks during this phase is killing a rabbit, preparing it for cooking and then eating it. Fortunately there are two students to this task so only one of the two does the killing. The other one then has to do the cleaning part. You cook it over the fire.

The best time to do the course is early spring or fall. Summers would be the next good period but the mosquitos are unberable. Winters are of course very cold in this part of the country.
