Helicopter Phase and your Future

Most of the student pilots get selected for helicopters because that's where the Canadian military has the most need (at least during the time I was taking the course). This course takes place in Portage la Prairie (Manitoba), so you come back to the same place where you started. It's about 5 months of training. Half of the flying is on the Jet Ranger and the other half on the Griffon. This is something new as before the whole course was on the Ranger.

Once you complete this course you finally get your wings. Training is not over though as you are now selected for a particular job and you need to undergo "operational training" and in some cases learn how to fly yet another machine (as in the case of a Sea King or the Cormorant). Most students will continue on flying the Griffon though.

Hey Marty,

The new helo course is actually more around 6-7 month long. The great thing about it compared to the old one is the access to 2 pretty awesome simulators. They are great for emergencies and IF. The other thing is that the second part of the course is done on a bell 412, not a griffon even though they are pretty much the same. The 412 has a weather radar and an FMS which the griffon does not have.

cheers

Marty,

Do you know how many flying hours per year you get if you're posted to helos?
